Lumberjacks Season Underway

Expectations High in Flagstaff NAU Picked to Win Big Sky Conference

Road Warriors, they have already played the Arizona State University Sun Devils in Tempe. The final score ASU 44 NAU 13. The game was close and the Lumberjacks defense limited ASU in both the run and the pass. With 7:29 left in the third quarter the score was 13-6 ASU. It ended ASU 20-6. NAU was keeping it close, making it a game, then the wheels fell off as the Sun Devils scored three TD’s and a field goal to make the final score 44-13.

The Jacks had a great moment in the fourth when Elijah Marks went 87 yards with a Case Cookus pass and then Griffin Roehler extra point kick was good. Freshman Griffin Roehler also had two first half field goals. His performance on the Pac12 stage had to be a thrill for the family and all the students from Agua Fria High School. Pretty good game on a very big stage for the cousin of former NAU quarterback Jason Murrietta.

Head Coach Jerome Souers loves hard work. This is his 19th season at the helm and 2015 was one of the best campaigns to date. The reward for the team was being selected by both the media and coaches poll as the favorite to win the conference.

Souers became the Big Sky’s all-time leader in conference wins with 72. The Lumberjacks averaged 50.8 points per game at home, never scored less than 41 points, and went undefeated at the Walkup Skydome in regular season play for the second time in three years. Filling the Dome for most of those game.

The hard work? The schedule, once again features opening games against top foes. Week one was as tough as it gets. Week two, a road trip to play the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. A quality opponent that was 7-6 and made to the second round of the FCS playoffs.

The experience gathered and team building that occurs in a tough early schedule has benefited the squad over the years. It is a chance to measure their skills against their foes and to quickly adjust to the many distractions that can pop up on travel games.

There is no easy path to a Big Sky title. Eastern Washington, Montana, Montana State, tough rivals are in their path. EW opened with a win over the Pac 12 Washington State Cougars. 2015 Big Sky Champions, Southern Utah stands in their way as does Portland State, North Dakota, Weber State, Northern Colorado and Idaho State. Hard Work.

The team is loaded with talent in every position and should do well on offense, defense and special teams. There will be record setting performances and hi-light plays every week. We will be there to give you the scores and recaps for the NAU Lumberjacks all season long.
