ACU FIRESTORM 2016
ACU Firestorm Messed With Texas And Won In Cowboys Stadium
ACU Interception Locks In The Win 29-22 .
A good trend is emerging for ACU as they get win number two in the CSFL. The running game is producing with 228 yards this week and 177 last game versus Langston. In this pass happy world that is college football, nothing says "we can do this" to a coach more than shifting to the run and forcing a defense to come up. This gives the OC and QB more TD's and first down options.
The Firestorm know that with quarterback Gerrit Groenewold they will get the important plays through the air. They won the CSFL Conference title in only their second year of existence and their first year in the conference. A big part of those wins was how the running game Spark'ed the "O" when the air attack was bogged down. Entering 2016 minus P.J. Sparks left more questions than answers.
To make things more difficult, new Head Coach Jeff Bowen scheduled "up" to bigger stronger teams for his early season "tune up" games. The result was 1-2 start that included two great performances on the ground and one very weak 17 yards on 22 carries total rushing game and an invisible 0.8 yards per carry average. If you write home to mom and tell her about that performance, you will be doing your own laundry when you get home on break.
Because a football season is built in steps, one each week and because being able to run the ball is so important I will review the games leading up to this one.
Game 1 vs University of Texas Permian Basin Loss 34-49 (MOJO) Rushing yards on 42 carries 5.6 ypc
Game 2 vs Sul Ross in Alpine, Texas. Win in OT 30-27 Rushing yards on 44 carries 4.2 ypc
Game 3 vs Davenport University in Grand Rapids, MI. Loss 7-20 Rushing yards on 22 carries 0.8 ypc
Game 4 vs Langston at SMHS. Win 34-10 Rushing yards on 41 carries 4.3 ypc
Game 5 vs SAGU Lions in Waxahachie, Texas in the NFL Cowboys Stadium. Win 29-22 Rushing yards on 50 carries 4.6 ypc
They are now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. With 830 rushing yards. A very good thing.
The men carrying the rock and doing the most damage: Quinta Thomas and Justin Carroll. Note: Early in the season another running back destined for a lot of yards, Alec Hathcock was injured and is out for the year. They are not alone, others contributing on the season. Damario Fair, Marcus Horne, Alias Sturges.
Quinta Thomas 60 carries 337 yards 5.6 avg and four touchdowns. Receiving 7-112-22 ypc 1 TD.
Justin Carroll 35 carries 235 yards, 6.7 avg and two touchdowns. Receiving 11-147-13.4 ypc 2 TD.
Back to this game. QB Gerrit Groenewold was 21 of 31 for 208 yards and two TD’s and 2 INT’s. However, he was under a lot of pressure and was sacked three (3) times. The other passing TD was by Tyler Dunken.
Catching the touchdown passes were Donovan Smith, Streeter Turner and Alias Sturges. The squad spreads the ball around well. Also getting grabs: Tyler Dunken, Alan Freeman, Johnathan Parks, Damario Fair, Justin Carroll, Dajon Staton, Quinta Thomas, Scott Kuhn.
Punter, kicker Derek Brush added three extra points.
Defense got great play from Will Johnson, he had a TFL and a sack. Quintin Riley, Bryton Green TFL & FR, Kori Hurd sack & 2 TFL, Chris Oatman and Austin Schleier shared a TFL, Gary Stevenson shared a TFL and had a forced fumble. Robert Harding, Miko Kennedy-Goff sack, TFL, Orlando Thompson TFL, Malik Sawyer TFL & INT.
The team is under a lot of pressure because they are defending champs, every game will be a dog fight. They are showing balance in their offensive play and that carried them to this victory. SAGU had a chance to steal this win but the defense rose up. Malik Sawyer’s pick sealed the deal for ACU.
On Saturday, October 15th at 2pm the Firestorm face yet another Texas team, at home on the Shadow Mountain High School Field when they play the Texas Steer. I could not make this mascot up. Apparently the school, Texas College is not too interested in their sports. The main page lists all the games with all the foes logos, but do not have page that shows the scores. (Is this really a Texas football team?) I believe they are 2-3, good to know.
Just Because Fact, JBF: The top QB rating in the nation may belong to an ACU passer that is 100 per cent on all his throws. That would be Tyler Dunken (Not a QB in real life, but he plays one on some Saturdays) he is 2 for 2 on completions with 36 yards and two (2) touchdowns and a 7.2 yard average. That is not the impressive part, his QB Rating is 581.2. Well call me Brett Favre, ain’t that something.
You can find their scores online each week at our CFB Website You can also get live game scoring updates on Twitter @aspnradiocom as well as on Facebook we have been bringing the news of ACU Firestorm football since they began.
